Standing Stone

This huge monolith is beautifully situated on the the north western tip of Valentia Island. We had traveled here to photograph the lighthouse and this large megalith. The light was superb when we arrived, but to our dismay the stone is located within the walls of a star-shaped fort known as Cromwell's Fort and the gates, which lead to the lighthouse, were locked. Thankfully we managed to get a few nice images. The slim standing stone is 3.4 metres in height by 1.4 metres wide.

This image below was taken from the road leading down to the lighthouse. The walls are those of the star-shaped Cromwell's Fort. The standing stone can be seen inside the fort. There are wonderful views of the lighthouse and fort from Geokaun Mountain, the highest point on Valentia Island.

Situated: From Portmagee, drive over the bridge to the island. Turn right 3.8 k turn left at the church. After 2 k turn slight right. Then go over crossroads (Slight left and right). Experienced drivers only from here. After 500 metres turn right. Follow the road to the end.
